Daniel Bhaumik, Civil Engineer from Carroll Engineering Corporation, visited Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia on December 6th to help run a workshop with the two dozen students in their engineering club. The workshop included discussion on the variety of disciplines there are in civil engineering, including roadway and structural design, after which students asked questions.
The workshop activity was the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) designed “Windy City Tower”. Students were given material and given instructions to design and build a tower that would not overturn due to wind from a nearby fan. Basic wind loading effects were explained and students were able to see how their towers failed or succeeded against a wind load. With some redesigning, all students were able to have their towers perform as expected.
