The Bonnell Tavern Redevelopment Project
Explore the historic Bonnell Tavern
A foundational landmark of Clinton, NJ, established in 1767 by Lt. Colonel Abraham Bonnell. Serving as a pivotal gathering place through America’s formative years, it hosted significant political meetings and became the headquarters for the 2nd Hunterdon County Militia during the Revolutionary War. Not just a site of historical gatherings, by 1770 it was a central voting location for the area.
Fast forward to 1956, the construction of Interstate 78 impacted the property significantly, reducing its original size but not its spirit. Recognized in 2004 as one of the county’s most endangered historical sites, the Tavern’s story continues to captivate.
The Vision:
Historical Elegance Meets Modern Comfort:
Today, plans are underway to transform the Tavern into a modernized restaurant that retains its historical charm. The proposed restaurant will blend the old with the new, incorporating historical memorabilia to celebrate its revolutionary past and other significant historical roles, including its part in the Underground Railroad.
Owned by Henry C. Bonnell, a direct descendant of Abraham Bonnell, the site’s future looks to honor its past, ensuring the Bonnell Tavern remains a beloved landmark on Clinton’s Main Street.
A Foundation of History and Modernity
The Bonnell Tavern Redevelopment Project showcases Justin’s commitment to merging historical preservation with modern development needs. By surveying this 1767 landmark, Justin has played a crucial role in ensuring that the site’s historical essence is respected and preserved while facilitating its transformation into a vibrant modern restaurant.
This project not only honors a piece of Clinton, NJ’s storied past but also sets a standard for future heritage projects. Henry C. Bonnell, Owner of Bonnell Tavern: “Justin’s precise survey work has been pivotal in blending the Bonnell Tavern’s rich history with its future potential. His expertise ensures that we honor our heritage while embracing modern functionality.”
